Dating Disasters: When Bumble Meets Reality

Dating Disasters – When Bumble Meets Reality

Dating in your 40s should be easy, right? You know what you want. You know what you definitely don’t want. You have survived bad haircuts, questionable life choices, at least one toxic relationship and enough red flags to decorate a football stadium.

So you download Bumble.

Because apparently we enjoy suffering.

The profiles all sound suspiciously perfect: traveller, adventurer, loves dogs, enjoys good food, spontaneous, emotionally mature.

Excellent. Finally, an adult man who sounds capable of leaving the house without a committee meeting.

Then you meet him.

Suddenly “traveller” means two package holidays in 2009. “Deep conversations” means explaining his ex-wife for 47 minutes. “Spontaneous” means ordering the same beer he has ordered since 1998.

Dating Disaster #1 – Nuno: The Future Husband

The first date starts innocently enough.

Coffee. A little flirting. Small talk. You are still deciding whether you like his shoes.

Nuno, however, has apparently already completed the entire relationship.

By the time you reach the second coffee, he has mentally moved you into his future.

Three divorces? Two daughters? No problem. Apparently this is not a warning label. This is simply part of the extended family package.

He starts discussing where you will live. Then holidays. Then retirement. Then the dog.

You are thinking: “Should I order cake?”

He is thinking: “Should we spend Christmas in Portugal or Austria?”

He has already planned the next 100 years together.

I haven’t even decided whether I want a second drink.

At some point he casually mentions your future bedroom arrangement, your future dog and how often you will visit his mother.

Nothing says romance quite like being assigned a retirement plan before dessert.

Lesson learned: If a man starts planning your grandchildren before you know his surname, RUN.

Dating Disaster #2 – Andre: The Vanishing Man

Andre starts beautifully.

Great messages. Great chemistry. Funny conversations. Three dates that actually feel like dates rather than an interview for the position of “potential girlfriend”.

He says good morning.

He says good night.

He asks questions.

He seems interested.

Suspiciously interested.

Then, suddenly…

Nothing.

No argument. No awkward conversation. No “I don’t think we’re a match.”

Just silence.

One day he exists. The next day he has apparently been swallowed by the Atlantic Ocean.

I consider the possibilities. Phone lost? Alien abduction? Sudden witness protection programme? Did he accidentally walk into Narnia?

Maybe his emotional availability expired.

The funniest part is that these men often return weeks later with a message like: “Hey stranger 😊 How have you been?”

How have I been?

Oh, just living my life, travelling, looking after dogs, watching sunsets and wondering whether you were alive.

But welcome back, Captain Disappears-without-Explanation.

Dating Disaster #3 – Carlos: The Overthinker

Carlos has one special talent.

He can turn a normal WhatsApp message into a UN investigation.

You send: “Had a lovely evening 😊.”

He replies four hours later:

“What exactly did you mean by lovely?”

Excuse me?

Apparently the smiley face needs forensic analysis.

Was it a romantic smiley? A friendly smiley? A polite smiley? A smiley with hidden intentions?

Congratulations. You have accidentally entered a relationship with a man who needs a PowerPoint presentation to interpret an emoji.

Then come the questions.

Why did you use three dots?

Why did you answer after 22 minutes?

Why did you say “okay” instead of “okay 😊”?

At this point I don’t need a boyfriend.

I need a lawyer.

Dating Disaster #4 – Chris: The Man Who Wants Everything… Except a Relationship

Chris says he is “not looking for anything serious”.

Perfect. At least he is honest.

Except…

He wants daily messages. Weekend trips. Dinner together. Sleeping over. Emotional support. Your undivided attention. And preferably exclusive access to your calendar.

But a relationship?

“Whoa, let’s not put labels on it.”

Apparently “relationship” is a terrifying word, somewhere between “tax audit” and “root canal”.

He wants girlfriend benefits on a free trial.

No subscription. No commitment. Cancellation at any time.

Sorry, Chris. The free trial has expired.

Dating Disaster #5 – Mr. 47 Selfies

Then there is the man whose Bumble profile contains 47 photographs of himself.

Same face. Same sunglasses. Same mysterious expression.

Beach selfie. Gym selfie. Car selfie. Bathroom selfie. Holiday selfie. Another gym selfie.

One picture includes a dog.

Finally! A personality.

Then you meet him and discover that the dog was doing all the conversational heavy lifting.

Dating Disaster #6 – The Ex-Wife Collector

First date. Wine. Nice atmosphere.

Within seven minutes you know the complete history of his previous relationships.

His first ex was crazy.

His second ex was narcissistic.

His third ex “changed after the wedding”.

Apparently every woman before you was the problem.

At this point I have one question:

And what exactly was your contribution to this magnificent collection of disasters?

Dating Disaster #7 – The Man Who Is “Very Busy”

He likes you.

He really likes you.

He just has no time.

He is busy Monday. Busy Tuesday. Busy Wednesday. Thursday is complicated. Friday is impossible. Saturday might work in three weeks.

Yet somehow he has time to post six Instagram stories, go surfing, attend a football match and photograph his dinner.

Interesting.

Apparently “busy” is modern dating language for “I like you, but not enough to put pants on and meet you.”

The Dating Survival Guide

After enough Bumble adventures, you develop a system.

Red flag? Ignore at your own risk.

Too intense? Run.

Disappears for three weeks and returns with “Hey stranger”? Delete.

Still talking about his ex after 40 minutes? Order the wine and prepare your escape route.

Plans your retirement together on date one? Ask for the dessert menu and quietly move seats.

And if he says, “All my exes were crazy”?

Congratulations.

You have just become the next episode.

Why I Keep Swiping

Because somewhere between the disasters, there are funny stories.

And honestly, I’d rather laugh about a disastrous date than cry about it.

So I’ll keep travelling, chasing sunsets, looking after dogs, drinking wine, exploring Portugal and occasionally swiping right.

Because maybe the next great adventure really is hiding behind a suspiciously filtered profile picture.

Or maybe it is another man who has already planned our wedding before ordering his coffee.

Either way…

To be continued.

Bumble hasn’t seen the last of me yet. 😂

Dating disasters are not failures. They are content.
